I am a photographer and illustrator from southeast Michigan.I received my BFA from Wayne State University in 2022 and much of my photographic body of work revolves around analog techniques and processes. I primarily shoot 35mm film as well as 120mm. I have also begun to experiment with polaroid emulsion lifting as another avenue of creation. The majority of my current work is concert photography or landscape photography centered around midwest living.

I’ve been practicing film photography for ten years. What began as a hobby became something more consuming. My pursuit with film sometimes feels like a search for an answer, other times, its a question. Sometimes there’s feelings I recognize in new moments and I want to hold them again. It’s a way for me to connect and examine. I’m still exploring what this work means as the reasons are always shifting.

Over the years I’ve tried my hand at making pictures of many different subjects. But I always find myself having the most joy documenting the people I love. Even if I meet someone for a moment, I still hold the frame in my hands with the utmost care. I’ve been lucky enough to make photos in places like our dear state of Minnesota to as far as the mountains in Thailand. However far I roam, I always find things I love to document which makes me feel a sense of home wherever I go.
I use black & white film for the majority of my work. B&W creates a space for irrelevancy in time.Whether I made a photo 15 years ago or yesterday, they all have a timeless aspect to me. Film photography feels like the most honest portrayal of how I interact with the world. Film is like a friendship. There’s a history behind it which you cherish and continue to learn bits and pieces with each interaction. It also is a slow process. You have to take your time. The more time you give to something you love the deeper your understanding and value within it grows.
Whenever I have been asked, “why do you take pictures?” My answer has remained the same. I take pictures so I can remember.

My work is in a perpetual sophomoric state. Too learned for accidental success, but free enough for happy little accidents, Bob Ross style. The analog process lends itself to this style of photography. Allowing me to share in the process rather than control it in totality. My photographs are simple, isolated, poised, and sometimes, accidentally complex. I'm learning to own it. These ideas are gifts from the universe. You must have the courage to hook them, and the fortitude to mount them above your fireplace.
Blah, Blah, blah. My name is Thom Abbott and I make photographs.
